A lot of people have a similar view of the theory and/or software - I have struggled with it at times, myself. But to me, making sure you have four throughlines that meet Dramatica's criteria (with or without using the software) can elevate most stories hugely - and often what isn't working in a script can be traced to how the throughlines work.

In my opinion, everything else is kind of gravy. It's easy to get caught up in trying to answer every question in the software and it can become very cerebral and not creative - I think it's best used as a resource to help you fix something you've written or brainstorm on areas of your script without getting too "completist" about it. But that can be hard to do...

I have purchased Dramatica and I have read the book a few times. I went to one of the Dramatica User's groups but I still can't get a handle on their theory of story. Chris Huntly couldn't even give me a clear explanation of it.

I got most of it. The Protagonist, the Impact Character, the through lines are all easy concepts but the software creates something that has no real connection to the story I am trying to create.

I just don't get it but in my opinion, the King has no clothes.
